INVESTMENT IN PAINTING – PROFIT FOR PATIENTS
Making money on art is more difficult than just putting money in a bank and waiting for interest to accrue. However, the modern art market and antiques often bring more serious returns to investors than deposits or stocks.
Not a single antique dealer is engaged in investments in art as actively as stock market players, say the leaders of galleries and auction houses. And over the past year and a half, individuals began to acquire eternal values much more often than banks and large companies. Many investors known today started from scratch: consulted with specialists, visited art salons and fairs, determining the style in which they were interested in investing money. Among people investing in antiques and contemporary art, there are former financial analysts, traders, and even mathematicians. They appreciated the benefits of this business, which allows not only to earn, but also to constantly be surrounded by beauty. So, on what subjects of art can one make good money in Russia and how to act for a novice investor?
Old means reliable.
Antiques is considered one of the most profitable investments: the market is quite developed, the basic rules of the game on it are defined. In addition, the buyer has confidence: the acquired item will not depreciate, which can easily happen with the subject of modern art. Antique values and paintings by old masters are suitable for long-term investments. According to the international art catalog Hislops 2003 Price Guide, between 1997 and 2002, the value of some works increased by 700%.
Of course, it is unlikely that you will be able to buy a painting by Aivazovsky at the famous Moscow auctions: most of the works of famous artists are already in the collections. Even if sometimes masterpieces appear on the market, they cost a lot of money: for example, the starting price of a painting by Nikolai Roerich at the Gelos auction is more than $ 30 thousand. At the same time, experts often cannot guarantee the authenticity of a work. Therefore, a novice investor is likely to have to do something less valuable. For example, antique banking stocks.
Individuals especially often purchase antique items when other investment instruments no longer provide high returns. It is at such a time, according to antiquaries, that people like to invest in what they can
touch with your hands.
The buyer went wrong.
According to dealers and owners of antique galleries, recently not only sellers, but also buyers have become much more literate: they do not run the risk of purchasing things whose authenticity has not been verified. The only way to avoid fakes is to carefully check documents for objects and use the services of a consultant. Collection-level antiques are always sold with a certificate – expert advice from specialists. In addition, all salons, antique galleries and auction houses have their own consultants.
Most experts are former or current museum workers. As a rule, they specialize in a specific direction of painting, metal products, etc.
The president of the Gelos auction house Oleg Stetsyura warns that an inexperienced person in the art market may suffer serious losses: “This is a more subtle investment tool than others. Without my own consultant, I would not advise a newcomer to enter the market. Experts can be found in large retail outlets specializing in the sale of objects of art. Dealers who have extensive experience in working with things and are engaged in certain objects – products from porcelain, silver, can act as consultants. ” Oleg Stetsyura advises paying attention to the wording of expert conclusions: so, if a work is “attributed to Shishkin”, it will cost half as much as a picture, the authenticity of which has been practically proved. An investor who is not afraid to take risks can make decent money on such subtleties.
Contemporary art costs less than antiques. However, according to experts, its price is increasing quite quickly. For example, since the beginning of 2002, the cost of paintings by Vladimir Dubosarsky and Alexander Vinogradov has doubled exactly after one of their works was acquired by the Pompidou cultural center in Paris. But it’s easy for a beginner to get lost in the world of contemporary art. Which style do you prefer? What to invest in – in photography, graphics, paintings by abstract artists or sculpture from industrial waste? The easiest way is to seek help from specialists. Among the most famous galleries specializing in contemporary art are XL, Regina, Fine Art, Aidan Gallery, Krokin and some others.
